Int. schools to come under scrutiny from next year onwards: Ed. Minister
View(s):National Education Commission officials asked to set standards
A mechanism to monitor international schools will be introduced by the Education Ministry next year, Minister Susil Premajayantha said recently.
The National Education Commission has been instructed to set the standards for international schools to obtain registration.
Accordingly standards of the management, facilities, qualification of teachers and infrastructure facilities will be set by the Commission.
The Ministry would thereafter provide ratings for international schools to be able to register.
Minister Premajayantha said the Universityof Grants Commission (UGC) already has a system for private universities to gain approval and register.
He said there had been several requests from parents for a mechanism to be introduced to monitor international schools as some such schools were reportedly functioning below the required standards.
One of the allegations against international schools was the lack of experienced teachers at some schools, and another was that some schools were charging expensive fees from parents.
