The government has proposed to repeal Kandyan Marriage and Divorce Act provisions that allow minors to get married with the consent of their parents.

Accordingly, the Act is to be amended to make 18 years the legal age of marriage.

The draft Kandyan Marriage and Divorce (Amendment) Bill that seeks to repeal the provisions has now been gazetted. This comes as the Justice Ministry moves to make 18 years the minimum age for marriage for all citizens.

Meanwhile, consensus has also been reached to amend the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act to make 18 years the minimum age and the Justice Ministry is taking measures to introduce this amendment.

Laws are also to be amended to punish those who sign false declarations that pave the way for the marriage of anyone below the age of 18.
