White flags flutter in the wind as Lanka joins world in mourning for Queen Elizabeth II
View(s):Sri Lanka will join the UK and other countries in mourning tomorrow as the world bids goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II.
A special holiday has been declared for government offices and schools tomorrow in view of the State funeral for the Queen. Flags at all government buildings will continue to fly at half mast tomorrow.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe will be among a host of world leaders in attendance at tomorrow’s funeral.
White flags have been put up at Galle Face as well as in several other areas.
Meanwhile, a number of dignitaries have been signing the condolence book dedicated to the Queen at the British High Commissioner’s residence in Colombo throughout the past week.
Many local politicians, celebrities and organisations have expressed condolences and paid tribute to the Queen over the past week.
British officials have said that the funeral will be a “fitting tribute to an extraordinary reign.”
The funeral service will be held at Westminster Abbey, after which the coffin will be placed on the back of a gun carriage and taken to Windsor Castle. A committal service will be held at St George’s Chapel inside Windsor Castle, after which the Queen will be laid to rest in a private ceremony in the King George VI Memorial Chapel. She will be buried alongside her late husband, Prince Philip.
