Navy and Old Wesleyites win WPRFU U-24 Rugby 7s

Open Club champions - Navy SC

Navy Sports Club won the Open Club segment while Old Wesleyites bagged the Development Segment of the WPRFU Under-24 Open Rugby 7s Tournament, which was played last weekend at Police Park.

Navy SC outclassed Petersons by 50-5 in the Open Club final, recording the tournament’s highest score and the biggest winning margin. The winners scored from eight tries and five conversions while despite being fully dominated, Petersons managed to cross the line once to record an unconverted try. In this segment, eventual winners Navy SC, losing finalist Petersons, ZOBRA, Old Mudalians and Police Golden Brown competed.

In the closely battled final of the Development Segment, Old Wesleyites beat Panadura Rugby Football Club by 21-7 after recording their points from three converted tries. Panadura RFC scored from a solitary converted try. Besides the two finalists, Colombo University, Field Force RFC, SLITT, Sri Jayewardenepura University, Kelaniya University, Old Moralians, Kalutara RFC, Kotalawala Defence University, Gampaha RFC and Old Kannangara competed under four groups in the first round.

The day-long tournament was organised and conducted by the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU), with the able assistance of Sri Lanka Rugby, and sponsorship commitments from the High Commission of Pakistan, Nippon Paint, Prima KottuMee and Prima Treats and Booso’s Dental Chamber, who came forward to present cash awards to the four teams who reached the finals of both segments.

The awards presentation ceremony was graced by Kalsoom Qaiser, the Press Attaché of the High Commission of Pakistan in Colombo, Nemantha Abeysinghe, the General Manager of Nippon Paint, Sajith Gunaratne, the Deputy General Manager of Ceylon Agro Industries – Prima Group Sri Lanka, Roshan Deen, the President of WPRFU, SSP Nizam Jamaldeen, the Deputy President and Tournament Committee Chairman of WPRFU and Amath Booso, the Treasurer of WPRFU and also the Managing Director of Booso’s Dental Chamber.
