Nirekh and Taniya bag honours at 132nd Open Golf
View(s):Nirekh Tejwani and Taniya Balasuriya bagged honours at the 132nd Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championships and the Sri Lanka Ladies Amateur Open Golf Championship worked out at the Royal Colombo Golf Course between September 5 and 10. A near hundred golfers participated with a few entries from India.
A total of 32 golfers made the cut after the initial rounds with Nirekh teeing off with M.U. Chanaka Perera over the 36-hole final on the final day. A close battle ensued with teenager Nirekh turned around at the 18th with a 2-up slender lead. A large gathering was entertained to a sizzling final with Nirekh holding on at the 18th to pip defending champion Chanaka at the post.
Nirekh, fresh from his return with a satisfactory showing at the Junior Open in Scotland, played wonderful golf showing maturity beyond his years to be crowned the 132nd Sri Lanka Amateur champion. He became the second member of Royal Colombo Golf Club to secure the championship after 53 years when legendary Pin Fernando reached that feat.
Taniya continued to perform at the top level amongst the women golfers in Sri Lanka. She, along with her younger sister Sherin, made it to the finals creating yet another record for the history books. The Women’s final too went to the wire with the experienced Taniya edging out Sherin at the post.
