The SLTC Business School announced that it will launch its city campus in TRACE Expert City, Maradana, where it plans to create industry-ready graduates for the business world. The SLTC Business School is attached to the SLTC Research University and offers UGC-approved undergraduate programmes in a diverse range of business disciplines.

The Education Times spoke with Dr Damith Gangodawilage, who leads the initiative in opening the new branch of SLTC. Dr Gangodawilage, Senior Lecturer, is a practising academic with industry experience and explained how the SLTC Business School aims to train students through a technologically driven process.

SLTC Business School is situated in TRACE Expert City, a sprawling complex of rough-hewn brick buildings housing some of the nation’s prominent IT and Business organisations radiate innovation and professionalism, and is, as Dr Gangodawilage says, the centre of Industry and Business in Colombo. Its quarters hold some of Sri Lanka’s most innovative companies including the Orel Corporation, CodeGen and Calcey. The wide, open spaces inspire community and communication of ideas with other students, which Dr Gangodawilage says is an important component of education that the Business School focuses on.

He also says SLTC Business School aims to ‘map students to the global supply chain’; readying students for the international business world, especially as Asia and South Asia are becoming more attractive to foreign investors. Besides theoretical discussions, the students attending the Business School receive industry experience and have access to in-house lab facilities, setting SLTC Business School apart from other institutions in Sri Lanka.

Students are encouraged to connect with experts in industry discussions and have their entrepreneurial skills enhanced, and the programmes provide free time for students to interact with colleagues and discuss ideas. The Business School strives to commercialize the ideas and innovations of students so that when they graduate, they have a firm foundation to enter the business world, what Dr Gangodawila says is essentially a ‘double graduate’.

A large part of their teaching staff possess a wealth of industry experience, together with their professional and academic qualifications, and some sit on Executive Boards in Professional Organisations, giving students a keen insight into practical business knowledge.

The SLTC Business School also collaborates with other Universities and Professional bodies to give its students the best education possible, including MODUL University Vienna, Austria; and James Cook University Singapore for its Tourism and Hospitality Management Programme. Students can also transfer to the respective university after finishing part of the degree programme in Sri Lanka to get international experience. SLTC Business School is also a member of AACSB International, a professional body that counts Harvard Business School and Singapore Management University as some of its members, says Dr Gangodawilage.

Prospective students can choose to pursue a multitude of degree programmes including Accounting and Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing Management, Supply-change Management and Tourism and Hospitality. Local and London A-level students with at least three simple passes can apply to SLTC School of Business.
