High drama over hijacking of fuel bowser at Hanthana; police arrest two suspects

Two suspects of an organised crime gang were arrested yesterday after they attempted to extort money by hijacking a bowser carrying diesel to a transmission tower generator owned by a private company at the Hanthana Hill, Kandy Police said.
They said the suspects had come in three-wheelers, forcibly grabbed the driver and the assistant of the bowser, which was carrying about 6,500 litres of diesel. They brought the bowser to a desolate tea estate in the remote part of Hantana.
Later, the suspects also also held captive four transmission tower company representatives who had arrived in a taxi to inspect the diesel bowser.
However, one official who was in the taxi reported the incident to the police emergency unit 119, and the police acted immediately.
After conducting extensive search operations in the Hanthana area for several hours, the police were able to locate the diesel bowser and the gang.
Along with the arrest of two people connected to the organised crime group, three three-wheelers, swords, daggers and other goods were taken into the police custody.
The police are still trying to locate the other suspects, including the gang leader, connected to the incident.
The gang had demanded Rs 40,000 to release the bowser.
The police search party included Chief Inspector Thusitha Halangoda, Anti-Corruption Division OIC Thilak Samaranayake, Crime Division OIC N.G.S. Bandara, Police Inspector Weerasekara, and Deputy Inspector Weerasena.
