How to fight pests: Awareness programme for Puttalam coconut farmers

Coconut harvest in the Puttalam district is facing the threat of pest damage. The red palm weevil is the biggest culprit, say farmers.
In the past months many coconut trees had been affected by this pest infestation.
However, agriculture officers have now introduced a chemical treatment which they hope will tackle the mites.
An awareness programme was organised by the agrarian officers for farmers in Saliyawewa yaya-hatha area of the Puttalam district on how to protect their coconut harvest from the damage caused by the red palm weevil.
Cultivators were informed about both natural methods and chemicals that can be used to control the pest related disease.
Training programmes were also conducted on advanced agricultural techniques for the farmers.
