Patients to Ragama hospital inconvenienced by non functioning main lift
View(s):Patients visiting the Ragama Teaching Hospital have been inconvenienced as the main lift is not operational.
Patients seeking treatment at the Outpatient Department (OPD), orthopedic clinic, primary care unit, main pharmacy, eye clinic, and the ear nose and throat clinic, diabetes unit as well as the maternity unit have to take the stairs.
Hospital staff said those who are unable to walk up three storeys have to be either carried on a chair or taken on stretchers.
Ragama Teaching Hospital Director Dr S.E.A.L. Ranaweera said the lift had been broken for two years.
He said the spare parts had to be imported and he had made several requests to the Health Ministry asking for allocations, but the authorities have not yet taken action due to economic constraints. “The Ministry has only to spend Rs 400,000 to import the parts from Hungary and reduce the inconvenience caused to thousands of patients,” he said.
