Low-cost carrier FitsAir, the newest passenger carrier to join the Lankan skies, will take off this month at competitive rates flying off to Dubai, Trichy and Male. The commercial operations are set to commence from October 5, on its three A320- 200 aircraft that will have a seating capacity of 154 economy and 8 economy plus.

The airline that was previously functioning solely cargo operations will now convert its cargo carrier to a passenger aircraft that will be joined by two more aircraft, FitsAir CEO Peter Hill said at a media briefing held at the Taj in Colombo this week.

Despite the fact that airlines are being challenged by outside factors and not the easiest business to be in, Mr. Hill explained that they hope to break even in the first year itself.

He noted that the issues pertaining to the fuel shortage in Sri Lanka was not going to be a cause for concern for FitsAir as they have already made the required arrangements to source their own fuel.

FitsAir is owned by the Aberdeen Group and is privately owned and run by a 200-staff team of
Sri Lankans.

The airline will maintain efficient in-flight services with no frills and passengers will be offered simple complimentary refreshment. But more substantial snack/ meals and beverages are available for purchase onboard.

A free checked-in baggage allowance will be provided to all customers of 30 kg in addition to one free carry-on bag of 7kg. Special reduced fares may be offered featuring specially discounted rates and such fares may offer a reduced free allowance of 20 kg or no allowance at all.

Mr. Hill noted that they will be maintaining sustainable airfares and noted that the airline is in-house funded and will be operating one flight per day and three times per week.

These flights are expected to rapidly increase to daily flights and hope to take on several destinations in South India that will be introduced during 2023.

They will also be providing flights out of Jaffna into India, he said and they will not be going beyond Dubai at present. The airline also plans to commence services between Colombo’s Ratmalana Airport and Jaffna and then develop a mini hub in Jaffna to serve a range of South Indian cities.   Flights out of Ratmalana and Jaffna would be served with a 70-seater turboprop aircraft, the carrier stated.

In addition a range of domestic services are also being planned based around Ratmalana Airport working with tour operators and hoteliers to provide swift transfers and short-duration sightseeing tours. These services would use 12- seater Cessna Caravan aircraft.
