As the fuel crisis hit Sri Lanka in the past few months many delivery services switched from their motorbikes to bicycles.

A prominent taxi hailing app in the world, Uber launched its first ever Sri Lanka Economic Impact Report on Monday at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo. The report revealed that Uber contributed Rs. 81 billion to Sri Lanka’s economy in 2021 while Uber and Uber Eats produced Rs. 52 billion in consumer surplus. Increased flexibility provided to driver and delivery partners worth an estimated Rs. 1.2 billion.

At the event Uber Eats Sri Lanka, General Manager, Bhavna Dadlani Jayawardene stated that in September Uber Eats completed 24 million deliveries and over 100,000 deliveries via bicycles due to fuel shortage. She said, “During the peak fuel crisis transport became an issue. Delivery partners could not drive and customers could not receive their orders. At this point we introduced bicycle deliveries and opened up an entirely new stream to strengthen supply and make it possible for delivery partners to earn their livelihoods. This helped move people to deliver full time or part time with Uber Eats to make an additional income without worrying about fuel.”

“In September this year Uber Eats completed 24 million deliveries and over 100,000 bicycle deliveries so much so that some weeks almost 30 per cent of deliveries were done via bicycles. We touched so many lives positively during this short journey since we launched Uber Eats in 2018 and we will continue to unlock more value for the Sri Lankan economy and its people,” she added.

She also mentioned, today Uber Eats is present in five cities. “We are always looking to move into the suburbs. During the pandemic not just food but also essentials were delivered to the comfort of their homes.”

The Sri Lanka’s Economic Impact Report which was compiled by Public First, a UK based policy research firm also exposed that 92 per cent of riders use Uber for convenience and help save 3.7 million hours a year. About 96 per cent of female riders say safety is an important factor in choosing to use Uber.
