“” (let’s go to Jaffna)  was a project organised by the Tourism and Hospitality Management undergraduates of the Sri Lanka Technological Campus (SLTC) Research University in commemoration of World Tourism Day. This year’s World Tourism Day theme was – “Rethinking Tourism”. The undergraduates of SLTC Research University decided to raise awareness of tourism in Jaffna among both local and foreign travelers.

The project, held from September 27-29, coincided with the World Tourism Day on September 27. The objective of the project was to showcase alternative tourist experiences and destinations within Sri Lanka.

A special train was arranged from the Colombo Fort station to the Jaffna station with the involvement of the Sri Lanka Railway department. Sri Lanka Railway gave immense support in carrying out the project successfully and the Yal Devi train was retitled “The World Tourism Day Yal Devi Express” for the first day of the project.

Throughout the train journey, SLTC undergraduates got the chance to interact with the passengers to spread awareness about the importance of World Tourism Day along with information about Jaffna and more inspiring destinations out there.

Most of the visitors were unaware of certain destinations and they highlighted that some destinations were heard only through the undergraduates. The travellers praised the project and thanked the students for introducing new destinations to them. The undergraduates were also able to raise awareness on the importance of responsible traveling for railway passengers with their Garbage Disposal Project.

Along the journey, students communicated with local and foreign tourists and shared their knowledge and as a token of appreciation the ‘Jaffna Travel Docket’ was distributed to them.

The tourism undergraduates of SLTC explored Nainativu Island, Sangupiddy bridge, Kankesanthurai, Point Pedro, Naguleswaram Temple, Nagadeepa Buddhist temple, Jaffna Fort, and Nallur Kandaswamy temple as a part of their project.  Furthermore, public transport was chosen as the mode of transportation throughout the project with the objective of building confidence in every traveler that using public transportation was safe.

Through this project, the tourism undergraduates at SLTC Research University exposed travellers to the value of visiting Jaffna, the amasing places in Jaffna, and highlighted the culture and heritage of Jaffna. Jaffna culture includes a lot of customs and rituals which were handed down from generation to generation. The most prominent feature of Jaffna is its religious festivals such as Thai Pongal, Tamil New Year, Deepavali and Nallur Annual festival.

Many people are not aware of the religious festivals hosted in Jaffna. Another aim fulfilled by the students was the dissemination of knowledge about building sustainable practices in the tourist sector, and they were also able to educate others about the necessity of sustainable tourism.

With this “” project, the undergraduates were also motivated to build leadership qualities and teamwork and understood the importance of public transport.

The project concluded with the undergraduates successfully promoting Jaffna as one of the sought-after tourist destinations in the island.
