Tiny Tots Montessori’ Aweriwatta Road, Wattala celebrating their 25th Anniversary
View(s):Tiny Tots Montessori at Aweriwatta Road, Wattala, celebrated 25TH YEAR BY DONATING MONEY TO LADY RIDGEWAY HOSPITAL, Colombo. Present Directress Shiromie Amaratunga, (Dip.in AMI and Child Psychology) started Tiny Tots Montessori in the year 1997 with few students and three teachers.
As there was no separate building for the Montessori, she did conduct classes at a separate part of her residence. Her daughter, Dulanjalie Amaratunga (Dip. in AMI, Child Psychology and Dip. in Primary Education) was educated at the same Montessori, is the current deputy directress.
‘Dedicated coaching towards success’ is the slogan of Tiny Tots Montessori which is mentioned in the Montessori logo too. English language is the main medium of education along with Sinhala and Tamil media. To improve the standard of English, Elocution (Institute of Western Music and Speech) preliminary stage is taught.
The management of Tiny Tots Montessori always used to think ‘out of box’ and introduced number of extracurricular activities to their students during the last 25 years. A new concept ‘The Montessori Cricket’ was introduced to Sri Lankan cricket a couple of years ago. It was a new concept of Anura Amaratunga, the CEO of Tiny Tots Montessori.
The cricket pitch was declared opened at the same premises by Mr Sanath Jayasuriya, the former test cricket captain of Sri Lanka. Prior to that, the first Montessori indoor swimming pool in Sri Lanka was declared opened by Mr.Julian Boling, the former Olympic participant and Gold medallist. Coaching for both Cricket and Swimming is being conducted by qualified trainers in regular basis.
In the near future, Net Ball and Martial arts too is to be introduced. Percussion band, annual concert, fancy dress parade, quiz programme, annual sports meet, are the usual activities in addition to cricket and swimming. Children also take part in fun filled agricultural activities by watering the plants and identifying plants by its leaves.
Year-end x-mas parties and Vesak celebrations do take place annually. During the annual ‘blessing ceremony’ priests and chief incumbents of all four religions from (temple, church, mosque and kovil) used to visit the institute to bless the children, parents and staff.
The children have a better opportunity for physical activities due to a vast play area to run up and down and also with variety of garden play equipment. Majority like to play in the huge ball hut installed in the paly ground. The large structure of a ‘Rhino’ is the latest addition to the playground. This is something unusual to a Montessori play park, but it gives an idea to the tiny mind ‘why we lost such huge animals from our planet’ in addition to the fun they get out of it. As far as cricket is concern, female children too used to take part.
The cricket uniform is in blue and yellow, the colour and pattern which is similar to the uniform worn by the Sri Lankan cricket team. The students are being coached by professional trainers attached to leading cricket academies. After leaving the Montessori, the past student can also join the private swimming or cricket coaching classes to continue practices at a concessionary fee.
Anura Amaratunga, who is a qualified marketer, also wants to add further value to their students’ education curriculum in the future by introducing further activities. As the ‘motto, says ‘Montessori with a Difference’ the parents too, get an opportunity to take part in certain fun filled fellowship activities once children‘s events are over, especially during sports meet, x- mas party, and at other cultural events.
Tiny Tots Montessori is a Multi-cultural institute, and therefore separate religious rituals do take place daily before their studies. The ‘value of donating to under privilege and poor’ is inculcated in the child’s mind by visiting to ‘Children’s Home’ at Preethipura, where fruits are being distributed to sick children. Annual trip is the most fun filled event for both children and parents, where parents too enjoy and take part in various competitions to receive gifts.
The student new admission started for year 2022 and 2023.The board decided to offer a discounted celebratory fees structure for all Montessori new admissions to mark their 25th year anniversary.
