‘Machan Jeyaraj’ is no more

On Sunday October 2, cinema lovers were shocked to hear the unexpected death of award winning actor Dharsan Dharmaraj, who was just 41 year. Dharshan had died while being rushed to the National Hospital, Colombo after suffering a heart attack.

Born in Rakwana and studied at St. John’s Tamil College there, Dharshan came to Colombo with the aim of being an actor.

Started with Sidney Chandrasekara’s teledrama ‘A-Nine’, Dharshan entered cinema with popular film ‘Prabhakaran’ in 2008. Dharshan starred in large number of films including ‘Machan’ (2008), ‘Ira Handa Yata’ (2009), ‘Matha’ (2012), ‘Spandana’, ‘No Address’ (2015), ‘Aloko Udapadi’(2017) and ‘Tsunami’ (2020) to name a few. 

He won the Best Actor Award for his role in Asoka Handagama’s movie ‘Ini Avan’ (2012).

Among one of the latest films he acted ‘Praana’ (The Seed) directed by Sanjaya Nirmal was released in theatres last week. Playing along with Shyam Fernando and Niranjani Shanmugaraja, Dharshan is featured with a prominent character.

He played the character ‘Jeyaraj’, an obedient assistant of a fishing tycoon Weerawarnakulasuriya in the popular teledrama ‘Rella Weralata Aderai’ on Hiru TV.

Started in rural Rakwana, Dharshan achieving his dream of becoming an actor, had his final rites at his home town on Wednesday, October 5.
