From today, Aeroflot resumes direct flights
View(s):Russia’s flag carrier Aeroflot will resume direct flights between Moscow and Colombo from today. The airline will operate two flights a week on Thursdays and Sundays, a Civil Aviation Ministry spokesperson said.
Permission has also been granted to another Russian airline, Azur Air, to operate four charter flights a week starting from early November.
Aeroflot suspended commercial flights to Sri Lanka in June this year “due to the unreliability of the situation in terms of ensuring unhindered flights of the airline’s aircraft to Sri Lanka.” This was after the Colombo Commercial High Court issued an enjoining order preventing an Aeroflot flight from leaving Sri Lanka following a trade dispute. Though the ban was subsequently lifted and the aircraft was allowed to leave the country, the flights remained suspended.
The resumption of Aeroflot flights to Colombo was also confirmed at talks Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Russia, Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage, held with Russia’s Deputy Head of Federal Air Transport Agency Vladimir Poteshkin on Friday.
The matter of resumption of SriLankan Airlines operations, as well as the possibility of direct connection from other Russian cities with a population over one million people, including St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg, were also discussed, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Moscow said.
