An accomplished violinist

Mithini Navindya Dissanayake of Katukenda, Dankotuwa is an exception in playing the violin. She is well known as ‘the violin girl’ among music fans in Sri Lanka. After completing Gr 5 at ABRSM (Associat-ed Board of Royal Schools of Music) she was allowed to do Gr 8 exam right away, recognised as a qualifying exam for Music teachers worldwide. She is distinguished in singing too.

Mithini was born on Nov 12, 1998 to parents D A D J Priyalal, an engineer and director of a private firm, and Thamara Lochana, a teacher at Bauddha Balika Vidyalaya, Kirimetiyana. She completed her primary and secondary education at Dankotuwa Balika Maha Vidyalaya and claims many awards and certificates, including at National level.

“My badminton coach, Mr Indika Fernando introduced me to music teacher Mr Lal Perera of Wennappuwa. When I went to him, he said: “You need not buy a violin; till you get used to it you can use mine.”

Having completed O/L with 9 As and A/L with 3As, she is now pursuing her higher studies reading for a degree in Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Kelaniya.
