Dynamic and contemporary wildlife and nature-based tourism is rapidly gaining momentum and becoming popular among foreign and local travellers in southern Sri Lanka’s national parks including Yala, Bundala Lunugamavehera and Kumana creating new economic opportunities closely tied to natural environments.

Camping in Yala national park is a popular recreational activity in the nature-based tourism domain in the country at present providing accommodation for travellers at several luxury tented units opened in the Yala campsite recently.

It has now become one of the best ways to escape the high intensity of city lights and the worrisome noise of activities such as tooting of vehicle horns and experience the simplicity of nature.

Camping in the wild is the shared dream of many dedicated wild life enthusiasts longing for remote trails and peaceful seclusion.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) is extensively focusing on wildlife tourism sector as the country is undoubtedly placed in a splendid position in terms of forests, natural habitats and diverse species of wildlife that appeal to travelers, a top official of the Tourism Ministry disclosed.

He noted that there is still much that needs to be done to improve the wildlife tourism offering and make it more sustainable while also developing new opportunities and experiences that will help the country to compete more strongly in the South Asian region.

In this context, the newly established “Wild Trails by Suri” camp site consisting of five brand new air-conditioned luxury tents fitted with modern amenities along with a specious eco-friendly open air restaurant and a verandah situated in close proximity Yala national park is placed in a good position in terms of forest, natural habitats and diverse species of wildlife that appeal to travellers.

It is located on the Yodakandiya Sithulpauwa road and is about a 20-minute drive from the park entrance and offers an easy access to the Yala National Park.

The new tourism promotion strategy also highlights the needs of developing eco tourism exploring the potential to disperse tourists onto new routes in the wilderness such as “Wild trails by Suri” Yala camping site to incorporate additional attractions to the tourist offer.

Spending time in nature at this scrub jungle helps relieve stress and anxiety, improve the mood, and boost feelings of happiness and wellbeing, according to several visitors to the company site.

“Whatever you call it – forest bathing, eco therapy, mindfulness in nature, green time or the wilderness cure — humans evolved in the great outdoors, and your brain benefits from a journey back to nature,” one visitor said.

At “Wild trails by Suri” each tent can be reserved on a single, a double, or on a triple basis. The visitors will be offered a combination of Sri Lankan and western dishes.

On clear days the dinner will be served under the bright stars with a bonfire. Visitors will also get the opportunity to interact with a traditional village family and enjoy a typical Sri Lankan village meal.

Travellers will get an opportunity to witness a variety of birds like peacocks, crested serpent eagles, buffalo, spotter dear in hordes, wild boars and monitor lizards.

Crocodiles, elephants, and leopards are a rare sight. With about 10-15 elephants in zone 1, it is likely that you see at least one of them. While an estimated number of 75 leopards are present in about a 144 sq. km region, the chances of seeing even a sole leopard are rare.

The camp site extends across 10 acres of jungle, according to its founder Sena Suriyapperuma.

‘We at Wild Trails do not provide guests with only the accommodation and food, but also an array of activities which enable adventure lovers to get some value added to their stay,” said Goshitha Dullewa, Operations Manager of the camp site.
