Graduates of UTS College Sri Lanka on a pathway to success

When we consider the unique challenges of the last two years, it’s reassuring to see students with determination reaching their education goals. Young Sri Lankans with talent and ambition deserve every opportunity to succeed, and since its opening in 2019, UTS Sri Lanka has established a solid track record in providing such opportunities.

Students encouraged to achieve their full potential

As the pathway to the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Australia’s number one young university, UTS College offers leading academic English programmes, UTS Foundation Studies, and higher education diplomas designed with UTS entry requirements in mind. Every year, over 90 percent of the College’s diploma graduates achieve the marks they need to enter a UTS undergraduate degree. These impressive results are achieved through a combination of ongoing academic support, small class sizes, and practical learning. Students are encouraged to achieve their full potential as they gain skills that will equip them to succeed at UTS and beyond.

Prepared to handle any situation

One of the first students to join the Diploma of Engineering at UTS College was Vishnie Babeendran, who enrolled in October 2019. She has subsequently demonstrated unfailing dedication in response to every challenge of her study journey – including the arrival of a global pandemic. Vishnie commenced her studies on campus but had to adapt suddenly to Live Online during her second semester when Sri Lanka went into strict lockdown. Despite this unexpected switch to a new way of learning, she maintained excellent grades, and distinguished herself as the first winner of the UTS College Sri Lanka to UTS Pathway Scholarship. Vishnie says, “From day one, UTS in Sri Lanka supported me in every possible way. I highly recommend UTS Sri Lanka for any student who is looking for an Australian degree transfer programme. They helped me to reach my goals and I have developed lots of skills, such as team building, communications, and time management. I feel it has prepared me to handle any situation and adapt to the Australian teaching style.”

After successfully completing her Diploma, Vishnie was accepted into second year Civil Engineering at UTS.

While studying, she was included in the UTS Faculty of Engineering and IT Dean’s List for outstanding academic achievement in 2021 and 2022 consecutively. She was also awarded the UTS Engineering Undergraduate Achievement Prize of AUD $2000.

Pathway from Sri Lanka to Sydney

Following in Vishnie’s footsteps is Yowuna Ilangarathna, who joined the Diploma of Engineering programme at UTS Sri Lanka in November 2020, graduating at the top of his cohort and winning the Sri Lanka to UTS Pathway Scholarship.  Yowuna is currently continuing his second year of Civil Engineering at UTS, Australia.

Scholarship opportunities

The Sri Lanka to UTS Pathway Scholarship is awarded to all diploma students who are transferring to UTS in 2023. All Students completing the UTS College Diploma pathways are eligible for a 20 percent waiver on course fees for the remaining years of studies.  Also, all Diploma students achieving a GPA of 5.9 /7 will be eligible for a 25 percent scholarship for the remainder of their degree at UTS. For a business student with four semesters remaining, this is a saving of $21,400 AUD, and for an Engineering student with six semesters remaining, it’s a saving of $37,500 AUD.

Students who register before 20th October will be guaranteed a 15% scholarship and a 50% waiver of their registration fees. There will also be a limited number of merit-based 50% and 100% scholarships available for this intake. Top students will be selected for these awards through an interview process.

Supporting talented students

Ms Alison Hiscox, Principal of UTS Sri Lanka, says, “We’re proud of our students and do all we can to help them realise their potential. By offering an extensive range of scholarships, we ensure talented students like Vishnie and Yowuna receive the opportunities they deserve.”
