Student parliaments get electronic voting systems
View(s):Electronic voting systems are to be installed in student parliaments across the country. The Sri Lankan Parliament has expressed its support for the installation of the electronic voting system in student parliaments.
An awareness programme was recently conducted on the use of the electronic voting system for the student parliamentary election held at the Eheliyagoda National College. The awareness programme held online was titled “Assistance for an Electronic Voting System in the Student Parliament” and gave the opportunity for students and teachers to present their suggestions.
Eheliyagoda National College in Ratnapura will be among the first schools to use the electronic voting system for its student parliamentary elections this year.
Parliament’s Information System Management Director Mahesh Perera, Coordinating Engineering Director Lalith Adhikari and Legislative Services and Communications Director Janakantha Silva were among the Parliament officials who took part in the awareness programme.
The officials said by using an electronic machine for voting, the cost of printed ballots and ballot boxes would be saved and the labour and time spent counting the votes would also be reduced.
The senior officials explained to the students the information technology measures that could be taken to maintain e-voting activities without any errors at every stage from voter registration and voting on the election day to the announcement of the final results.
