Cash crop pays first dividend
View(s):More than two dozen farmers from 10 villages in Wanathavilluwa, Puttalam have reaped a good harvest of big onions by using ‘organic’ fertilisers in half an acre each.
The project, involving 25 farmers, was launched jointly by the North-Western Province Department of Agriculture and the Korea Program on International Agriculture (KOPIA). None had cultivated big onions before, said Ms Tharangika Shyamali, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Puttalam. Some farmers eventually started growing chilli along with big onions as an extra crop.
Farmer Mr Samantha Kumara, was appreciative of the support during the Covid pandemic and the fuel scarcity. “On some days, Agriculture Department officials had to travel all the way from Puttalam by bicycle to check our crops and give advice. We highly appreciate their dedication.”
Wanathavilluwa is believed to be ideal for growing big onions, agricultural adviser Mr Gayan Wickrama told the Sunday Times. “We hope to expand this project throughout the Puttalam District.’’
