Chinese soon to resume travel
View(s):While Sri Lanka has become a regional political football for India and China as both compete for higher stakes on the island, another new area of (competing) interest is tourism.
While India has been leading the way as the main source market for tourists to Sri Lanka, China – once the third largest source in 2018 – has been largely absent due to restrictions on outbound travel and COVID-19 restrictions. However that situation is likely to change soon.
According to Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in China, Dr. Palitha Kohona, restrictions on travel for the Chinese are gradually being relaxed. China, has over the months, reduced its tough quarantine requirements. Now a visitor is required to be quarantined in a hotel only for seven days and kept under observation at home for an additional three days, which he feels would encourage more outbound travel, particularly given the pent-up demand. In written comments to the Business Times, he said prior to 2020, 169 million Chinese travelled abroad. “We believe that following the extensive promotions that we ourselves at the embassy have undertaken, a significant number will pick Sri Lanka as their destination of choice. We have requested the Chinese government to designate Sri Lanka as a priority destination,” he added.
