New recruits for schools: Thousands of teachers, principals to retire this year
View(s):The Government is planning to recruit 11,000 new recruits to the teaching profession to fill in vacancies that will occur in provincial and national schools next year.
Around 8,000 teachers and 3,000 principals will be retiring from these schools at the end of this year. The Education Ministry has already called for applications to fill the vacancies and competitive exams are being conducted at the teacher training colleges.
Development officers recruited under the graduate employment scheme, who are working in various state institutions and are under-employed, will also be eligible to join.
The age limit is not applicable to these recruits. However they will be required to complete a diploma in teaching methods conducted by the National Institute of Education (NIE) within three years.
Students passing out from the National Colleges of Education (NCOE) will also be included in the selection.
Around 8000 students will qualify for teaching from the 19 NCOE across the country by end of this year.
This comes in the wake of several vacancies occurring in the education sector following the Government’s announcement of state employees’ retirement age of 60 years.
