Amended Islam textbooks next month: Minister
View(s):The Islam textbooks which were withdrawn from schools following recommendations made by the Presidential Task Force On ‘One Country One Law’ in January this year, will be re-distributed next month, the Education Ministry said.
During question time in Parliament last week, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha assured that the amended version of the books would be ready by next month and distributed first to students sitting the GCE Ordinary Level examinations in April 2023. Students in grades 6 to 9 would receive them subsequently.
The textbooks written in Sinhala and Tamil were withdrawn from schools after the task force claimed that some of
the contents could encourage extremism.
Although the books were withdrawn nine months ago, the ministry had shown no urgency to distribute the amended version and this had affected the students, according to a recent petition to the Human Rights Council of Sri Lanka.
However, ministry sources said the printing of the amended textbooks could not be completed due to the economic crisis and the restrictions on the import of paper although the tender was awarded in May.
School authorities have expressed concern over the delay in distributing the books, saying they fear it will affect students’ performance at the OL exams.
