View(s):Generations-long cinnamon cultivation may come to an end
I grow cinnamon and other export crops and it has come to a stage where the difficulties are becoming unbearable.
The yield has reduced and weeding costs increased significantly due to lack of fertiliser and weedicides. Now the situation has gone from bad to worse due to the shortage of fuel for hand tractors and brush cutters used for weed control.
I have obtained the necessary approvals from the Grama Niladarani and District Officer to obtain fuel but we are told they are still to receive approval from the Ministry of Energy “on how to issue the QR code”. When we tried to contact the Ministry of Energy our telephone calls go unanswered. It appears that the President’s instruction that people’s complaints should be responded to hasn’t reached the Ministry.
If the above is not resolved soon, sadly my family’s involvement in cinnamon cultivation for four generations will come to an end.

Where have all the trains gone?
We find that there are fewer trains operating from Colombo Fort to Anurdhapura and Taliamannar than there were earlier. This is an appeal to the Railway authorities to kindly restore the normal daily trains operating between these points between 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
There was a train operating to Talaimannar which was cancelled due to the COVID crisis. If this is resumed it would be extremely helpful.
