Of fortifications and military heritage of Sri Lanka
View(s):The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS Sri Lanka) will hold a two-day conference on November 5 and 6 on the theme “Fortifications and Military Heritage of Sri Lanka” covering both the colonial and historical periods of Sri Lanka.
To be held at the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology, Colombo 7, it is the first Sri Lankan conference on the subject and will feature more than 20 academic presentations by researchers, academics and professionals involved in this field and working in the Department of Archaeology, Department of National Museums, the Central Cultural Fund, The National Trust Sri Lanka and ICOMOS Sri Lanka. There will also be two presentations by scholars from the University of Lisbon, Portugal and University of Leiden, the Netherlands.
The keynote speech will be by Lt. Commander (Retired) Somasiri Devendra. Among intriguing topics discussed will be an Archaeological Study of the Development of Fort Frederick, Trincomalee, Weapons as depicted in Sculptures from Anuradhapura to Kandyan periods and Colonial Military History as Reflected in the Graffiti at Sober Island in Trincomalee.
