The Education Ministry has no plans to change the dress code for teachers or children, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

He said despite the Public Administration Ministry issuing a circular that public sector employees will be allowed to wear a suitable dress, the ministry does not hope to apply that to schools.

The Minister said this in response to suggestions that the dress code for teachers should be changed in keeping with the circular.

Ceylon Teacher‘s Union (CTU) Chief Joseph Stalin too was among those campaigning for the change of the dress code.

However, there were strong reactions from others that the dress code should not be changed as well.

Buddhist monks were among those who strongly campaigned against a change of the dress code.

Mr. Premajayantha said around 80 teachers were females, and a majority of them were used to wearing sarees and many of them were comfortable wearing sarees.

He also said teachers may lose the respect, particularly from primary class students, if their dress code
was changed.
