The underwater museum located off Sandy Bay Beach, Trincomalee is becoming famous among local and foreign tourists.
Weapons used in warfare and colonial era wrecked ships are displayed in the museum along with war time statues.
Vessels belonging to the Sri Lanka Navy, and damaged while in action, are also on display in the water. Some of these were in operation in 1961 and 1972, and were made in China. The museum is located half a mile from the shore, 60 feet deep in the sea. It is 160 metres long and 85 metres wide.
According to Navy Commander Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenna, action would be taken to develop the place in anticipation of tourist season. The sea museum was the brainchild of former Navy Commander Piyal de Silva.
