Swimmer Heshan Unamboowe was edged out in the heats after recording a time of 57.94 seconds in the men’s 100 metres backstroke event. Captured here are all the heat events for the Mens 100m backstroke.
Unamboowe said that he was nervous and it hindered his chances of breaking the National record.
"I wanted to go under 57 seconds, because my personal best was 57.4. The second 50 (metres) was really bad. I expected to go much faster in the second fifty," Unamboowe told journalists
Competing in the first heat of the event, Unamboowe finished second behind Ally Bradley of Barbados, who clocked 57.94 seconds, as a capacity crowd continued cheering. This was despite none of the hosts participants competing in that heat. Jordan Zane, who was the only other competitor in the three-man first heat, returned a time of 58.77 seconds.
Unamboowe was ranked 42nd among 43 competitors after the first round heat where 16 advanced to the semi-finals. Of the 16 who advanced to the semis, Gravers Mathews of USA recorded the fastest time, (52.92 sec).
