Toppled container causes heavy traffic

The traffic flow to Colombo has been interrupted causing traffic congestion due to a container toppled across the road at Nawaloka roundabout in Peliyagoda short while ago, police said.

The Customs at the Katunayake Airport has seized gold jewellery valued at over Rs. 45 million brought to Sri Lanka from Singapore today morning, officials said.

They said the gold weighing 5.7 Kgs was detected on a tip-off.

Legal process on Tamil detainees underway ; Govt

 The government will not be able to release Tamil detainees in a hurry as they are under investigation, minister Nimal Siripala de sivla told Parliament today.

This was in response to a call made by TNA yesterday (22) for the release of Tamil detainees presently in Colombo, Kalutara and Vavuniya prisons. 
 
He said that 359 in custody have been served indictments and they are in the process of filling indictments in 309 cases. 
 
He said 241more have been arrested since 2011 and held under PTA.
 
Out of 810 Tamil detainees, about 200 detainees are presently on a hunger strike demanding the early release as they have been detained without prosecution even after the end of war.
 

Experiments on gold find in Kelani river

 The National Geological Survey and Mines bureau is carrying out an experiment to establish whether gold has being found in the Kelani River as claimed by the villagers.

This was after villagers in Poogoda claimed that they found gold on the river bed.
 
“We believe that it’s gold that they find in the area,  but we are carrying out experiments to determine if these are pure gold,” Dr. N. P. Wijayananda, Chairman of the GSMB said.
 
He further explained that with the help of the police they are taking steps to stop illegal digging in the river and use the deposit as for the benefit of the people of the country.

Enjoining order on broadcast of Olympics

Colombo Commercial High Court Judge Gamini Amarasekera issued an enjoining order restraining the MBC/MTVChannels Pvt. Ltd. from informing public or telecasting any commercials statingthat the company got rights to telecast 2012 London Olympics.

 The orderwill be valid until June 06. Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, the state televisionmoved for the restraining order saying that unless order is issued corporationwould suffer huge loss and damage.

 TheRupavahini filing the case claimed that it only has the sole rights to telecastthe Olympics in the country.
