Four held in toddler’s abduction

Four persons were arrested for the alleged abduction of a toddler and for making a ransom demand of Rs. 500,000 to the parents, police said today.

They said the group was arrested at a location in Ahangama Meegagoda yesterday nearly two days after they grabbed the two and half year male child in front of his horrified mother at their residence in Udugama.

A hand grenade was also seized from the group, police added.

SL to commence maize export tomorrow

Sri Lanka will export the first stock of 10,000 metric tons of maize to Canada and Taiwan tomorrow, the Government Information Department said. 
 
The department stated that until recent times Sri Lanka has been producing only 15 percent of its maize requirement of 210 metric tons per year and the balance was being imported. 
 
Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene has said that the maize harvest this Maha season has been 235 metric tons. 

NSB chairman says he has resigned

Under-fire National Savings Bank (NSB) Chairman Pradeepa Kariyawasam said on Monday that he has resigned from his position, sending a letter of resignation to the President and the Treasury Secretary. "I have sent a lengthy letter of resignation, which I may release to the public later on," he told Times Online a short while ago(3 pm). The chairman was embroiled in a controversial deal where the NSB purchased a 13% stake of The Finance Co (TFC) at a price much higher than the Colombo Stock Market value. – Ends-
 

Two Saudi's held for abusing minor

Two Saudi nationals have been arrested in Sri Lanka for sexually abusing an underage girl in tourist hotel in Hikkaduwa, police said.

The girl aged, 17 had been provided by a woman from Vipulasena Road, Maradana. The woman also has been arrested.

The Saudi nationals are to be produced before the Galle Magistrate courts today.

The victim is reported to be from the Batticaloa district.

Woman arrested for robbing Indian diplomat's house

A woman had stolen cash and gold jewellery from the residents of  an Indian diplomat in Kandy has been arrested and will be produced in courts today, Police said.

The woman had robbed cash amounting Rs. 10,000 and gold jewellery valued at Rs. 200,000 from the residence in Kandy between last month and last Sunday,
