U-20 Rugby: Wesley hunt down giant killers Science

In a breathtaking turn of events Wesley College lived up to their potential to hand giant killers Science College a 25-14 defeat in their Singer Under-20 Schools Division I ‘A’ rugby match played at Mt. Lavinia today (18). 
 
The game was an even battle as both teams eye one of the top three slots in the league but it was the Wesleyites who eventually took charge of the proceedings. 
 
The winners led the halftime by 20-14 as they went on to score from four tries, a conversion and a penalty while Science scored all their points from two converted tries. 
 

U-20 Rugby: Kingswood stun Peterites with massive win

In a sensational Singer Under-20 Schools Division I ‘A’ rugby outcome Kingswood College brought down St. Peter’s College’s glory to square one after recording a comprehensive 41-15 at Bogambara today (18). 
 
Kingswood, who had just recorded their maiden victory of the season just seven days ago, raced to their second successive win with a priced kill against high-riding St. Peter’s, as they took firm control of the whole encounter. 
 
Kingswood who led the halftime by 24-15 went on to score from seven tries and three conversions while the Peterites scored all their points in the first half through two tries, a conversions and a penalty. 
 

U-20 Rugby: Joes beat title contenders Trinity by a whisker

In one of the major upsets, league title contenders Trinity College suffered a shocking 18-17 defeat at the hands of St. Joseph’s in their Singer Schools Under-20 Division I ‘A’ rugby match played at Longdon Place today (18). 
 
The Josephians brought down the cruising unbeaten run of Trinity who suffered their first defeat in seven games. 
 
The victor took a major share of honours as they took the lead at halftime by 13-10. 
 
Trinity tries their hearts out to turn the game around in the second half but nothing came their way. 
 
In the end the Josephians, who scored from three unconverted tries and a penalty, as Trinity finished by a whisker, after having scored from two converted tries and a penalty. 
 

U-20 Rugby: Isipathana win after Royal players walk out

After a surprising walk out by the Royal College rugby team Isipathana College were declared winners by 27-20 in their Singer Schools Under-20 Division I ‘A’ rugby league match played at the Royal Complex today (18).
 
The match was levelled at 20-all in the 59th minute when Royal players walked out as Isipathana players grabbed the opportunity to post an uncontested try which officially declared them the winners. 
 
Royal players staged the walk-out alleging that Isipathana players threw punches on them during play. 
 
Four of the Royal players were hospitalised for treatment. 
 
With the win Isipathana grabbed the Major Milroy Fernando Trophy. 
 
At half time Isipathana led the game by 17-10 as they scored from three converted tries, a drop goal and a penalty. 
 
Royal scored from two converted tries and two penalties.

Cricket: Injured Welagedara doubtful for Champions Trophy

Fast bowler Chanaka Welagedara has sustained an ankle injury in his right leg which makes his appearance in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2013 doubtful. 
 
According to a media communiqué issued by Sri Lanka Cricket, Welagedara suffered a foot injury while playing for Rest of Sri Lanka in the warm up triangular match against Sri Lanka A at Pallekele on Friday (17). 
 
Welegedara has just bowled only 2.4 overs when he was forced off the field with pain in his right foot and ankle. 
 
“Welagedara has suffered an ankle pain in his right foot. He came off immediately and is currently unable to put any weight through right foot.  He is getting scans over the weekend and will have the results by Monday (20),” it said.
 
Wekagedara who will be out of action on Monday, was the leading fast bowler of Sri Lanka's Test side.
 
But he was out of action during the ended year due to an injury. 
 
The 32-year-old fast bowler was one of four specialist fast bowlers named in the 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy alongside Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga and Shaminda Eranga and Nuwan Kulasekara. 
 
Meanwhile fast bowling allrounder Farveez Maharoof, who has not being picked for national service for over a year also injured during the match.
 
He will be kept out of action for two weeks.
