Bus bomb in Philippine south kills nine

MANILA, Oct 21 (Reuters) – A home-made bomb killed at least nine people on a bus on the troubled southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Thursday, security officials said.
The bus, carrying about 50 people, was travelling from Cagayan de Oro, a major port and industrial city, when the explosion occured at about 10:30 a.m. (0230 GMT). Nine people were wounded.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
“Eight people died on the spot and one at a local hospital where most of the bus passengers were treated for shrapnel wounds,” said Major-General Anthony Alcantara, army commander in central Mindanao.
“Our soldiers are helping the police investigate the bus explosion. We’re still trying to establish the motive for the attack.” Maoist rebels and Muslim separatist rebels are active in
Matalam in North Cotabato province, where the attack occurred.
