Rover pinpointsRichly rewarded?Rover learns a certain district association which held its AGM twice in one year, a record itself is to be rewarded with many being given free trips to New Zealand. We wonder at whose expense? Already seven have been ear-marked for the tour, with initials of TT, Dr. R.M., GW, BH, AJ, JP and RO with many to follow. How stupid indeed. How come?Is it not against the 'Sports Law' for a President of a District today be allowed to hold office as the Sports Minister of a Provincial Council? Nose divesThe much talked about Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium diving section is in a mess. Already one board has been removed and left to idle for the last four months, while the other looking dangerous with the board being slippery which might result in many being injured if no action is taken to repair the boards. Pool in a messThe activities at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium Pool is virtually at a standstill without proper notice being given even when a stage show is held at the Stadium or for some meetings which has no bearings on the activities at the swimming pool. This has put the training of the leading swimmers in disarray. Thuggery at soccerSchools football has been reduced to such a level that some of the leading schools are deciding not to participate in the ongoing tournaments due to thuggery being used by a school in Colombo Central on the players and spectators alike. Not stopped?Much talk was around, that the inquiry against Susanthika Jayasinghe by the Minister of Sports has been halted. When Rover contacted the Director of Sports, he denied the story and said that on the Minister's orders he had appointed Dr. Jayatissa Costa and Chandrasiri de Silva to conduct the inquiry and to hand over the report in two week's time. Ball talkMuch talk has been centred around the poor showing of the Sri Lanka cricket team in South Africa and their losing trend. This has been described by pundits that there is a split in the team. The simple reason is that the Lankan cricketers were not able to play on fast wickets. Pundits, eat those words! Bribery at large?Rover learns that a contestant for the Colombo District Cricket Association polls has withdrawn his candidature because his club was promised Rs. 2.5 million and a leading club from Colombo too has been promised Rs. 7 million by a contender who is going round buying votes to assure his victory at the forthcoming AGM. Like novicesThe organisers of the Ratnapura road race behaved like novices in allowing novices to race in the Road Race and allowed two persons who had never completed a race and ever won to act as stewards recommended by the Interim Body. Rover also learns that timing equipment imported costing millions on the approval of the former Minister of Sports were not usable at the said races. It also learnt that a doctor's wife was injured at the said races before the major accident occured.
