In Brief

Readers sought Clarifications on Duckworth/Lewis Method

Mr G Suriyarachchi of the University of Peradeniya has raised a few questions with reference to the Article published in last week's Sunday Times on the Dukworth/Lewis Method

Q.As Sri Lanka lost 8 overs their Resource Percentage dropped from 70.5% to 64.8%.In other words 5.7% for 8 overs.Does this mean that in the D/L method a single over is equivalent to 0.714%?

A.No.It actually depends on the number of wickets that were lost at the time of the interruption .For example if Sri Lanka had not lost a single wicket at the time of interruption the drop in the Resource Percentage would have been from 91.4% to 81.5%,which would have been 9.9% for the 8 overs lost.In this case Sri Lanka would have utilized only 90.1% (100% - 9.9%).Thus as South Africa has 42 overs and 10 wickets which gives them 92.5%,their revised target would have been increased to 220. (92.5%/90.1% x 214).

Q.What was the special disadvantage to South Africa that had to be compensated for the lowering of the target?

A.The disadvantage to South Africa was that they had a resource percentage of 92.5% at the beginning of their innings where as Sri Lanka utilized a Resource Percentage of 94.3%(according to the table)even after the interruptions. Please note that these values are directly taken from a Table that has been prepared by Dukworth and Lewis based on the wickets and overs that are left.

Q.What would the adjustment have been if Sri Lanka had lost 9 wickets at the time of interruption and the last pair took the total to 214?

A.In this instance Sri Lanka would not have lost any of it's Resource Percentage,as the Resource Percentage at the time of interruption (21 for 9 wkts in 9 overs) and at the time of re-commencement(33 overs and 1 wkt remaining) is identical (7.6%).Thus there is no loss of Resource Percentage for Sri Lanka. They would have utilized 100% .Thus as South Africa have only 92.5%,their target will be reduced to 198.(214/100 x 92.5)-MF
