Water warning heededBy Shelani de SilvaConsumers have taken a warning about water cuts seriously with authorities reporting a reduction in the consumption in the past week.Water Board's Additional General Manager Kithsiri Perera told The Sunday Times there would not be any water cuts because water levels had improved following a drop in consumption and recent rains The Water Board had warned that if consumption levels had not been reduced water cuts would have to be imposed within two weeks. Meanwhile, the Ceylon Electricity Board said power generation capacity had improved because of some rain in catchment areas. An official said the Board would not be contemplating any power cuts till May because the power consumption this month would be generally low due to the closure of several factories during the Avurudu period. Two weeks ago the Water Board made an appeal to consumers to reduce the consumption of water or face cuts specially in the greater Colombo region. There were appeals to cut down on watering gardens, washing vehicles and careful use of water from roadway taps. Although authorities say there is a drop in consumption, these pictures tell a tale of continuing wastage as well as hardships faced due to water cuts in some areas of Colombo.
