Trends around the world

The fashion 'gurus' of the world who rule the haute couture scene of Rome, Milan, London and Paris, the fashion capitals have decreed that the key words this season remain 'simplicity and innocence'.

Yet, designers around the world are still to abandon the street-smart chic of earlier seasons and fashion magazines spotlight a combination of romance and daring for those who want to follow the latest trends. In this Mirror Magazine fashion spread, we bring you, the highlights from the international catwalks and also what local designers recommend for the Lankan market (see Pages 8 and 9).

Tops are very much in focus with one shouldered and bustier type tops swarming the runways. Ultra slim pants with a tiny fringe at the end together with super tight hipsters give them the final touch. Dresses are also still in vogue with more than a touch of olde-world romance seen in the empire waists, scooped necklines and small frills and edges. And just as we thought the suit phase was disappearing it's come knocking at the back door - for the necktie, which was exclusive to the males, has now hit the ladies' closets.

The general colours are soft, ranging from hot pink to lilac. But in Milan, shades of blue and black take priority together with brighter, burnt orange and red accessories. Black is as always, a simple yet effective fashion statement, and this season black is back. Be it leather, lace or elastic, black makes the difference. Coffee colours were extremely prominent as make-up during the last few seasons but now they've also edged their way into the clothing arena.

'The Baby Doll Look' and 'Flower Power' too have taken the haute couture world by storm. With this all new sugar and spice attitude comes puff sleeves and not so innocent dresses of sheer chiffon. Flowers are to be seen on anything and everything, on chiffon and leather, on shoes and around necks. Frills, beads and other little accessories too are abundant on the catwalk.

Transparent and skin colour material is everywhere when you consider eveningwear. But uptown girls - don't despair; street smart clothing has its place at the top this season.

Forget special accessories; dress up your clothing instead. Speaking of accessories except for the immense amount of beads on the runway - the belt too is high profile this season. If thick, let it sit slowly on the hips. Look for leather and shiny metallic to make a statement.

Closed, boot type shoes are an important addition to the fashion conscious wardrobe. Don't forget plain and oversized bags with plenty of beads and fringes.

Right, there you have it - this season is going to be big, wild and cute at the same time. Get your credit cards out; it's time to hit the shops!
