Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
"A child prodigy, a genius", the people said of him.
With many a prince to pander to his whim.
He charmed them with his manners - the empress, with a kiss.
To propose to Marie Antoinette, this child, could not resist!
The "Genius" remained, but the novelty soon wore thin.
At 35 - a pauper - no one to idolize him.
He found then, as people did before, and people do today,
That when you're on your way 'down' - no one stands in your way.

Circle of dreams
I saw
A shooting star
Falling down
Towards Earth.
I closed my eyes,
And made a wish.
Days passed by,
With a forgotten dream
Which never came true.
Years later,
As I watched the night sky
A shooting star caught my eye.
I closed my eyes
To make
A wish.

Upside down
My little nephew aged two
Once dragged me out of bed at dawn
Visibly agitated and babbling baby gibberish.
It seemed he wanted me to share
Some inconceivable calamity.
Pulling me by the hand, he led me on
To the verandah, the very site of disaster
There on the ground lay in total disarray
A vase of flowers, toppled from its stand
By a gust of wind.
Overnight, his world had suddenly turned
Upside down.

Down
Want to relax?
Sit down in an easy chair.
Climb a ladder?
Get down before you fall.
Go up hill?
Come down safely.
Reached your destination?
Get down from the bus.
Large bulky body?
Put down your weight.
Ferocious and angry?
Calm down immediately.
Save your soul.
Go down on your knees and pray.
The drama is over.
Bring down the curtain.

Down that lane
Down that lane of memory
I walked one day,
Worshipping the little golden shrine,
Of my happy memories
Then I chased all the evil spirits of
Past troubles, sorrow and anxiety
And locked them in a tiny cell
And threw that key down an abyss.
Then a moment's thought made me remember
That I have imprisoned "hope" and "courage"
As well, by mistake.
Now I'm searching down the abyss
With no hope.

Down Memory Lane
Down Memory Lane I recall
The days we went sliding down
The stairways
In girlish abandon
Escaping the teacher's gaze
Forgetting the creases left on our uniforms
Of great escapades down to the school gate
Licking the veralu achcharu
Bought with a hat collection
Waiting for Pappa to come to the parlour
With Mamma's parcel of string hoppers
With delicious Ambul Thiyal
We share with our friends on Kehel Kola
Now with silver hair and crackling knees
My thoughts meander down Memory Lane.

Down
Whenever my "creative outbursts"
are published, I feel I'm flying
On a flower-petalled cloud....
Then quite often I find myself
Deep down in a pit,
Cocooned in a shroud.
Could it be depression
Caused by wounded vanity,
And desire for self-aggrandisement?
Yet I remain enthralled
In my enchantment,
Choosing words to fit the theme....
The crazy delight,
The exhilaration of chasing
Elusive phrases....
As if I'd climbed the hills of Madulkele,
And stood there breathing
Cypress-scented air,
Far above tea gardens
Trees and waterfalls cascading
Down below, towards the river.

Mercy
Fallen from the net
Warm, cute, the baby squirrel cowered
In my palm; tremulous, silent,
Affrighted; the eyes pleading mercy.
Fror reassurance I preened
The down, silky, smooth
Under the neck.
And a strange sensation
Coursed through my sinews
Awakening in my heart
A compassion, moving, ineffable
I had not known slept there....
- Ben Beddewela
Going down
Down the aisle
With you by my side
A new world.... a new life
Nothing's the same.
Treading a path so newly laid
Every turn springs a surprise
Down to the last penny
Down to my last friend
Will you let go if I panic?
I may scream
I may scratch
Will you understand?
Will your smile be the same?
Down to my last wish
Not a genie in sight
Will your love hold?
Or will I go down?

Down
Down, down, down the mountainside the skier sped. He barely touched the
snow as he zipped, past firs and boulders in a blur of red, enjoying the
exhilarating thrill of the challenge.
Suddenly, he lost control. He fell into the soft snow. Tumbling towards
a danger zone, he grabbed a branch, just in the nick of time. Near the
edge of the precipice, he dared to glance over. Then he shuddered, as he
looked down into the yawning abyss; down into what could have been....
