LTTE to impose
dress code for Jaffna women
By Our Jaffna Correspondent
The LTTE is preparing a Taliban-style dress-code for women in Jaffna,
compelling the wearing of sarees in the process of ushering in a
'cultural revolution.'
The compulsory wearing of sarees is yet to be implemented for fear
that there may be some resistance from the ladies, many of whom
dress in more casual western skirts as well.
The LTTE has
stepped up what it calls 'cultural activities' in the Jaffna peninsula
and is assuring artists that it would honour and help them to publish
literature about the liberation struggle when they set up the proposed
interim administration. LTTE's Cultural Affairs Section chief Puthuvai
Ratnathurai and the Officer in Charge of the LTTE' TV section, S.Seralathan,
have been engaged in discussions with artists, writers, musicians,
videographers and owners of audio-video recording centres over the
week.
They have called
them to write and record the historical events. Owners of video
centres have been told to destroy sex films which they have been
screening or lending over the past few years. LTTE's Political wing
members have been visiting villages to conduct meetings with respected
citizens and explain plans of the movement and the proposed interim
administration. They were also explaining about the taxation and
the recruitment.
Many of the
youth, including graduates, had expressed their desire to join the
proposed interim administration. The LTTE also has opened up a political
wing office in Velvattithurai, its leader Velupillai Prabhakaran's
home town. They were also seen screening films on attacks on military
camps in the past while the video cassettes of these attacks have
been made available in video centres.
