Former Foreign
Minister in new role
The Geneva based World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO)
is to hold a meeting in Colombo of eminent South Asian scientists
and researchers to discuss ways of making medicines covered by patents
available for developing countries at cheaper prices.
The UN agency
is to hold this international meeting early next year on the maximisation
of profits for the cultural industries of developing countries,
following a recent meeting of its Advisory Commission in Beijing
this week. Former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar attended
the WIPO Advisory Commission meeting as an expert in his private
capacity.
The Commission
of which he is a member, focussed on two topics of particular importance
to developing countries - intellectual property and public health,
and managing cultural assets.
