Examiners' errors
A close friend sat the A/L examination in December 2001. Her subjects
were Greek and Roman Civilization, English and Statistics. After
the exam, when I asked her how it was, she said that the Statistics
paper was hard, but she hoped to get good results especially for
GRC. When the results came she was shocked. She had failed GRC and
got only Ss for the other two. Finally, she applied for rescrutiny,
but everyone thought that there was not much of a chance. Then she
decided to sit the exam again.
After three
months she received a letter stating that instead of an "F"
for GRC, she had a "C". It's a good thing that she got
better results, but how many other "mistakes" did the
examiners make? How many students are out there with incorrect results?
I think the relevant officials should concentrate on their work
and be accurate because students have to suffer the consequences.

Glow-worm
Glow-worm, glow-worm,
You have elected to crawl
Upon the earth, by night
Void of a modicum
Of pretentious display.
Unconcerned, hardly noticed,
Your speed in moving
Is slow and languorous
While the fire-fly
Takes wing to be airborne,
Contriving to project
The tiny image
In a wanton display
Of effulgent pomposity,
And his flight is
Seemingly swift and showy.
Both being endowed, albeit,
With the gift of specks of
Similar phosphorescent light.
Before the might
Of the light of the sun,
However
Both dwindle into insignificance
Let it be known
O! glow-worm,
He is bound to be the one to be
Adversely affected.

X-rated
movies
I am a 16-year-old who travels to school by van together with my
siblings. We pass many cinemas that screen 'Adults Only' movies.
All these are English, Hindi, Tamil and even Sinhala X-rated movies.
The problem is that one does not have to watch these movies to know
how obscene they are - one only has to glance at the boards that
advertise these movies and it hits you in the eye.
I have very
small siblings and it is embarrassing when I hear their comments.
Their reactions are more out of innocent curiosity. They try to
imagine what is happening and I don't think that's healthy. I am
barely grown up myself.
The older generation
says that children are corrupt. Do you blame us?
A certain cinema
close to a leading boys' school in Colombo always has only X-rated
movies. My brothers go to this school. Authorities should take action
against this.

A sunflower
After long dark days
I blossomed as a little flower,
By your ray of light.
And you looked at me with
Your bright eyes.
And I was charmed by your
Soothing ray of light.
Then you became
the apple of my eye
I felt very proud
Because, I thought
'Oh, a prince looks at me'
And, I lived very happy.
But you may understand
My pride
After a little
time
You took your eyes away from me
Oh, I am very sad
But I have nothing to do
I turn always to
Catch your eyes.
But you try to
Move away from me
The only thing I could do
Was to take a long rest
Because, I have no world without you.

One Sri Lanka
Different races and religions should co-exist in harmony in Sri
Lanka. Without people there would be no language, without language
there would be no music and without music there definitely would
be no dancing.
To know how
enchanting and vibrant a mix of cultures could be, put the four
main races of our multi-cultural country together and watch the
creation of a heavenly medley.
One nation, one nationality is the only way to prosperity. For only
then can we say - we are proud to be Sri Lankan.
Until the day
the ocean dies and touches the sand, we should be one united land.

Polythene menace
For millions of years, elders taught the young how to make the world
a better place. Now times have changed but I believe it's time someone
told our dearest uncles and aunts in Parliament that they don't
know the meaning of being eco-friendly!
They use polythene
(the colour of their party) to decorate the streets wherever they
go. It doesn't look neat or nice. But our learned leaders continue
to put up coloured polythene flags.
Polythene is
not bio-degradable. Once it is strewn around it blocks canals and
drains.
Another thing is that faces of these aunts and uncles in parliament
adorn walls. They shouldn't smear and dirty the walls. They should
be more concerned about keeping the environment clean.
For when the
crab leader walks awry - so do the young.

Food for
thought
Food is considered a basic need of human beings. It nourishes our
body in three ways. It gives energy for metabolism, provides substances
for tissue formation and repairs, and plays a vital role in maintaining
the system in order.
The type of
foods we eat, and dietary awareness have changed over time. Today
people are struggling with time and go in for convenient foods.
However, consumption of these refined, high sugar, high fatty foods
could cause many health problems such as diabetes, dental caries,
obesity and subsequently hypertension and coronary diseases. The
world has seen a rapidly growing demand for low-calorie low-fat
and fibre foods.
As consumers
we have the right to select what we want. The choice is ours.

The prayer
Beside my bed, on
the hard floor
I made a little prayer,
I asked God if He would let me know
Just how I could get up there.
I told Him that I understood
How great a task this was
So I promised to do all I could
To make the wish come true.
In my dreams
I thought,
God would give me instant wealth.
I realised what my prayer was about,
It gave me inner health.
To begin with,
God gave me pain,
He made me poor and humble
And I wondered what I could gain
From things that made me tumble.
He made me sad
and made me lose
Until there was
nothing left
So I decided to choose
To enjoy my life instead.
And then I began
to realise
What my quest was all about
It was the secret of the wise
It was the best
no doubt.
