Navy officer's
case goes to Attorney General
By Laila Nasry
A fundamental rights application pertaining to a battle casualty
Naval officer, who had been subjected to harassment at the hands
of his superiors, was referred to the Attorney General by the Supreme
Court for consideration as to what can be done for the betterment
of the officer in the interests of justice.
The Bench comprising
Justices S. W. B. Wadugodapitiya, P. Edussuriya and Hector S. Yapa
having heard counsel for the Naval officer in support, thought it
prudent to refer this matter to the AG considering the special circumstances
in which the officer had been placed.

The Fair Trading Commission with reference to our story last week
"Bitter Bottle Battle" has sent the following statement.
'We would like to draw your attention to the statement attributed
to the Chairman namely, "The Commission feels that there is
a prima facie case which is one reason why we have not jettisoned
it. The problem is complicated. Yet evidence gathered is strong
and we will have to consider every aspect.
I have initiated
a fresh probe to identify any new circumstances that may have occurred
since last year" in the above article on Sunday Times 19 May
2002.
The interview to the journalist of the Sunday Times was given by
the Chairman and the Acting Secretary General together. We mentioned
that the new Board is examining the evidence before it and also
gathering any relevant new information, but has not come to any
conclusion so far.
We totally deny
the contents in the said paragraph and request you to kindly publish
a correction. Note : Our reporter stands by the story.
Come, buy my
flowers
Today as Buddhist devotees flock to temples, flower sellers with
their carts or huts filled with blooming lotus flowers also flock
there. One such flower girl is 14-year old Inoka Malkanthi who sells
her flowers at the Kelani Viharaya. Inoka had to give up her education,
so that she could financially support her parents and five siblings.
During this Vesak season let us spare a thought for young girls
like Inoka who has to eke out a living even on Vesak day.
