CBK case suspect
also in swap
By Shelani Perera
An LTTE cadre who has been charged with involvement in the attempted
assassination of President Chandrika Kumaratunga two years ago is
among 23 cadres whom the LTTE wants released in exchange for seven
security forces personnel.
The LTTE cadre
has been indicted for carrying the material to assemble the bomb
to Colombo from Trincomalee. The LTTE has also asked for the release
of a suspect who is charged with the killing of TULF Parliamentarian
S. Thangathurai in 1997 in Trincomalee and another cadre identified
as Kennedy who has been charged with destroying an aircraft at the
Palaly air base in 1995.
The Government
was awaiting a response from the Attorney General's Department regarding
these three LTTE cadres while the 20 others had been cleared to
be released, government sources said.
The exchange
of prisoners was to take place on August 31 but was put off due
to legal snags with Minister G. L. Peiris assuring it would happen
within the next few days.
