Doc's killing
still a mystery
No clue has been found by the police team investigating the killing
of the doctor at Maharagama on Thursday night.
The killing
of 33-year old Dr. Wasantha Seneviratne working at Sri Jayawardenepura
Hospital is leaving the police baffled and his family in shock.
According to family members he had finished his private practice
at Erawwala around 9 p.m. on Thursday and gone to his residence
at Pamunuwa, Maharagama. He had parked his car outside the gate,
as he had intended to visit his wife who was in hospital having
given birth to their first child. He had collected some items for
her, got into his car and even before he could close the door of
his vehicle, he had been shot four times with a 9-mm pistol at close
range, police said. While his family says that they do not have
the slightest idea as to the motive for his killing, an assistant
of the doctor at his private practice said that there was a suspicious
three-wheeler outside the dispensary in the evening.
"I even
mentioned this to the doctor and he replied that since our collection
was only Rs. 1,350, even if someone broke into the dispensary we
would probably feel sorry for them and give them some money",
the assistant said.
He said he had
questioned the three-wheeler driver as to why he was there and he
had replied that the police had taken his keys and as such he could
not start the three-wheeler. "There were about four of them
hanging around", he said, adding that he had gone out for a
few minutes to purchase some drugs and when he returned he found
that the three-wheeler had gone. "I don't think it was possible
to start the three-wheeler without the keys so soon", he said.
The Maharagama
police who are conducting further investigations had recovered four
pellets from the scene of the crime.
