Govt, LTTE discuss
military matters today
The Sri
Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) will discuss its role regarding
the High Security Zones (HSZ) today, when the military affairs sub-Committee
representing the government and the LTTE meets for the first time
in Omanthai.
The SLMM's deputy
head Hagrup Hauckland told The Sunday Times that they would be seeking
further guidelines about their functions at today's meeting.
The committee
headed by Defence Secretary Austin Fernando and the LTTE's Batticaloa
district chief Karuna with the participation of the SLMM officials
is scheduled to discuss a series of measures connected with security
related matters. The other members in the government delegation
are Major General Shantha Kottegoda, Major General Sarath Fonseka
and Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera.
The LTTE team
on the committee includes Colonel Theepan, S. Illamparithy, Kaushalyan
, Colonel Pathuman, Thilak , Colonel Jayame and Elilan and a Sea
Tiger who is yet to be named.
Norway's Ambassador
Jon Westborg will also be present at today's meeting. The government
and the LTTE have also appointed two other committees to deal with
political and economic matters.
The first meeting
of the economic committee is scheduled for November 18. It will
discuss key issues prior to the aid pledging conference in Oslo.
Peace Secretariat chief Bernard Goonetilleke told The Sunday Times
the government nominees to the committee would be decided on within
the next few days.
