PM reassures
SLMC
Prime
Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has assured the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress
that the issue of the LTTE setting up police stations and courts
in the eastern province would be included in the agenda of the next
round of peace talks between the government and the LTTE.
SLMC leader
Rauff Hakeem said the LTTE action was a violation of the ceasefire
agreement. "We have written to the Norwegian Ambassador as
well as the Prime Minister and he has assured us that these matters
would be taken up at the next round of talks. In the meantime, we
expect the LTTE to exercise some restraint in this regards,"
Mr. Hakeem said.
He said the
Muslims would never submit to LTTE domination. "We need substantial
authority in our areas and we will not be subject to any compulsion
to comply with an LTTE administration," he vowed.
Mr Hakeem met
the Prime Minister to discuss the issue after the LTTE began setting
up more police stations and prepared to set up its own courts in
the East. The LTTE has declared that it would cover not only the
uncleared areas, but also accommodate complaints from the cleared
areas.
