Joyful
music from Gateway
By
Ishani Ranasinghe
Buoyed by their success with the 'Boyfriend', the students
of Gateway International School
are now all geared up to bring us the wonderful joy of music.
'Thank you
for the music' which goes on the boards at the Lionel Wendt theatre
on November 23 and 24 will bring together the junior and senior
choirs of Gateway International school assembling on stage, almost
80 budding stars. For most of them, this will be their first 'big'
concert and it has been a whole new, wonderful experience. Their
enthusiasm and determination is quite evident to anyone who sees
them at practice.
"After
'Boyfriend', it was evident that here was a talented bunch, therefore
the school decided to let them enhance their talents by putting
together a musical festival," says Ruwani Seimon Seneviratne,
Director of 'Thank you for the music'.
'Thank you
for the music' will feature well-loved hits from Abba, Grease, Little
Mermaid, Christmas songs and adaptations of some of Broadway's well
loved musicals.
"The students
have organised the show by themselves. They designed the costumes,
the souvenirs and some of the seniors have also helped me with the
choreography," says Ruwani. "Their devotion and dedication
during the past few months have been amazing,"
The main sponsor
for the event is Gestetner and the co- sponsor is Maxies.
Pizza
Hut: Going places
By
Thiruni Kelegama
Pizza began simply as a garnished flat bread sold by roaming
vendors to the poor in the streets of 18th century Naples. Probably
the biggest step towards its present-day persona was the acceptance
of the tomato by the Neapolitans, and its subsequent use as pizza
topping.
The ideal pizza
topping was made with tomato, mozzarella cheese and basil (the colours
of the Italian flag - red, white and green). When the royal family
of Naples were introduced to it, they loved it. Soon, it became
an even bigger hit with the people.
The story of
Pizza Hut began in 1958, when two college student brothers from
Wichita, Kansas, Frank and Dan Carney, were approached by a family
friend with the idea of opening a pizza parlour.
After borrowing
$600 from their mother, they located John Bender, an airman from
McConnell Air Force Base who had worked as a pizza cook, purchased
some secondhand equipment and were ready for business. The first
night, they gave away pizza to interest potential customers. The
result of their entrepreneurial efforts was the first Pizza Hut
restaurant and the foundation for what would become the largest
and most successful pizza restaurant in the world.
Many people
ask how Pizza Hut got its name. When the Carneys were setting up
that first restaurant, the building had a sign with room for just
nine characters. They wanted to use 'pizza' in the name, which left
room for a word with only three characters. A family member suggested
the building looked like a hut and Pizza Hut was born.
Sri Lanka became
part of the Pizza Hut family on November 26, 1993 when their outlet
opened at Union Place. Since then, they certainly have gone places.
Now with branches in Wattala, Rajagiriya, Havelock Road, and Express
outlets at Crescat and Liberty Plaza, they can firmly say they are
a success!
"Our system
is the best we can provide to our customers," says Shamal Gunawardene,
Brand Manager, Pizza Hut. "We dedicate ourselves to them and
we make sure that they get the best always."
"Pizza
Hut will be launching an on-line ordering system on our website,
so that foreign customers would actually be able to order pizzas
from anywhere in the world, to send to their loved ones in Sri Lanka,"
he continues. "This feature should be very successful, and
we are the first to introduce it."
Yes, pizza
sure has an enthusiastic following in Sri Lanka.
