Colombo
gets Cinecity Multiplex
Sri Lanka will have its first Cinema "Multiplex"
opened in December this year, in Colombo. This modern and popular
facility in the field of cinema will provide Sri Lanka's cinemagoers
the opportunity of choosing a film according to his or her liking
among several motion pictures under one roof.
"CineCity
Multiplex" built in the vicinity of Elphinstone Theatre in
Maradana will consist of four Cinema Halls, two Restaurant/Cafeterias,
Snooker and other entertainment facilities, an office complex, shops
and a Banking Hall. The Film Lanka Ltd., has estimated Rs. 116 million
for this project.
The concept
of providing a complex of this kind was conceived by President Premadasa,
subsequent to a proposal put forward by the UDA and the Tower Hall
Foundation. Its importance was stressed by the loss of Gamini Theatre,
Elphinstone Theatre and Tower Hall of Maradana to the Cinema industry
Accordingly Film Lanka Ltd., started building this Complex in 1994
after obtaining a land through a competitive tender process., said
Dr. Buddhi Keerthisena, the Director of Film Lanka Ltd.
However the
Board of Directors of Film Lanka Ltd., with its founder, Buddhi
Keerthisena, the veteran film producer and its Chairman, Vishwanath
Buddhika Keerthisena has succeeded in overcoming the difficulties
after a struggle of eight years. Now 50% of the construction work
of "CineCity Multiplex" is completed. According to Dr.
Buddhi Keerthisena thanks are due in this regard to Martin Fernando,
the Executive Deputy General Manager of People's Bank and to Tissa
Abeysekera, who became the Chairman of the State Film Corporation
in 1999. Prior to that the Film Corporation's treatment to this
project was step motherly.
"Mr. Tissa
Abeysekera did his best and the maximum in assisting to make the
"CineCity Multiplex" a reality." he said.
The remaining
work of the project is being carried out and the support of the
present Chairman of the Film Corporation, Jayantha Dharmadasa is
also being received.
The "CineCity
Multiplex" is to be completed in two stages.
The first which
will be declared open in December 2002, will have two Cinema Halls,
a Restaurant, Shops, a Snooker Hall and a space for a bank branch.
Parking facility for 50 vehicles is also planned.
The 2nd stage
which is to be completed in May 2003 will have two more cinema halls
on the 3rd floor, a restaurant/cafeteria, an office complex and
a video production section.
The fully air-conditioned
four cinema halls will be furnished with all the modern facilities,
in keeping with the new world trend. The seating capacities of the
four halls are 350, 300, 180 and 100. The seats specially designed
for cinema halls will be imported.
Three out of
the four cinemas will be equipped with DTS sound systems. The main
cinema with 350 seats will be for screening Sinhala films. English
films and Tamil films will be screened in two separate cinemas.
The fourth cinema will be for screening foreign films of the highest
quality, which are normally not imported by NFC or any other Oskar
distributor.
When the "CineCity
Multiplex" is completed it will be a fascinating experience
to Sri Lankan' filmgoers as well as to the other exhibitors says,
Dr. Buddhi Keerthisena, who is also the advisor to the CineCity
project.
