JVP on why it
boycotted Ranil's briefing
The JVP
which boycotted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's meeting with
Opposition parties to brief them on the peace talks and the donor
conference scheduled for Monday states that the party was not given
a clear idea of the agenda.
Prime Minister
Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday called for a meeting with party
leaders in Parliament where he briefed them on the Oslo meeting
before his departure.
However the
JVP alleges that once it received the letter on Monday (18) requesting
the party leader to be present in Parliament at 12 noon, it had
inquired as to the purpose of the meeting to which the PM's Secretary
had replied it was to discuss about the "talks". The party
states that as it was not clear it had insisted on being told the
purpose.
The JVP states
it had inquired from party leaders the agenda of the meeting but
no one was aware of it. "When the Government wants to discuss
such important issues it should be more clear. We feel that the
Prime Minister called the meeting in a very haphazard manner. The
correct way should have been to inform the Opposition so that it
can even form a group consisting of opposition leaders who can discuss
among themselves and come to a decision. Instead we are asked to
go and listen to the PM spelling out his plan," Parliamentary
group leader Wimal Weerawansa said.
The party further
added that the meeting was called so that the Prime Minister could
say that the Government received the fullest support from the Opposition.
