English
cricket coach highly impressed
English Cricket Coach Mike Griggs who is in Sri Lanka on a voluntary
coaching stint is highly impressed with the Sri Lanka Schools cricket
standard and the enthusiasm for the game amongst the boys.
The 34-year-old
Griggs who was one of the first to qualify as a ECB level three
Coach in 1999 has already had coaching sessions with St.Peters and
St.Benedicts and is expected to have similar sessions with St Josephs
Colombo and St Anthonys Kandy this week.
Cricket means
so much to these youngsters. They are very hardworking and have a
tremendous enthusiasm to learn and most importantly are very talentedî,said
Mike when The Sunday Times spoke to the coach during a practice
session at the St.Benedict's College nets.
Mike who uses
a mix of skillful games and techniques to drive his points relies
mainly on the Digital Video Camera to coach his students. This camera
helps the boys a lot. They are able to instantly have a look at themselves
and see not only their weaknesses but also their strengths. In addition
they can even correct their mistakes easily and see how they can
learn and pick up things quickly.
The Coach also
uses a series of excercises and games to improve a players hand
to eye co-ordination. This is a very important aspect especially
for a batsman. You must have a good hand to eye co-ordination to
complement your skills. However the coach was also of the view that
it's not only the Technique that matters when you are on the field.
You need to
have a positive attitude and the will to win.You have to be strong
mentally, believe it yourself and have that self confidence in you
,stressed the coach. -MF
