Filth behind
flashy city food court

A roast chicken on a garbage bin, cooking oil being reused to dangerous
proportions, dirty floors and other filthy conditions were found
by Public Health Inspectors when they raided a popular food court
which is patronized by thousands of people daily.
The CMC's Chief
Medical Officer, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam, who led the Friday night
raid said he was shocked and horrified by the dirty conditions behind
the super-class façade.
He said legal
action would be taken against four of the food court restaurants,
which in any event were not supposed to cook their food at the restaurant
itself, because proper facilities were not available. He said the
behind-the-kitchen scenes in the clean-looking restaurants were
disgraceful.
"They were
filthy. The fridges were full of cooked food and raw meat all stacked
together. In one restaurant, a roast chicken was left on top of
a garbage bin. In many cases, cooking oil was being reused too often
and we have taken samples to test whether there are any cancer-causing
properties," Dr. Kariyawasam said outlining the putrid mess
behind the plush menus.
